Maribor is a beautiful city with the oldest vine in the world. It has been awarded the title of European Best Green Capital for 2025. Additionally, it was voted third in the list of best places to travel in Europe in 2023 and was chosen as the best European destination to visit in autumn 2024. By car you can travel to the region of Maribor:

⚠️Additional information for drivers in Slovenia:

  • For motorways a vignette is mandatory (weekly vignette – 15 €, sold at every gas station),
  • seat belt use is compulsory in all seats where they are installed,
  • use of dipped headlights is compulsory at all times of day and night,
  • use of fog lamps is permitted only when visibility is reduced to less than 50 meters.
  • obligatory equipment includes a warning triangle, spare set of lights, first aid kit and reflective vest,
  • the maximum permitted blood-alcohol level for drivers is 0.05 percent, on the condition that no ability is impaired. The police may therefore prohibit you from driving even if the alcohol test shows a lower level. They are especially strict with younger drivers. Alcohol tests for drivers are frequent, and the penalties very high, so it is not worth the risk if you have drunk too much.

Parking in Maribor

Maribor in the city is mostly not free. You can pay the parking fees by using Easypark mobile phone application and there is also always a parking machine nearby where you can pay with cash. The parking fees in Maribor range from 0,4€ – 1,5€ /h and parking is paid from Monday to Friday (exact times are on the signs).

If you see the following sign it means that parking is not free. Underneath it there is almost always a sign that says how much the parking costs per hour and from which to which hours parking fees are collected.

Buses in Maribor

One ride costs 2€ if the ticket is bought from the driver and 0,8€ if the ticket is bought at a newsstand. Since bus services are integrated with Google Maps, it is best if you use the planner available on Google Maps or just use the app on your phone (Android or iOS). What to do in and around Maribor at your free/extra time

Maribor is wonderfully nestled in the embrace of the green Pohorje Mountains on one side and the picturesque wine-growing hills on the other. The city is located by the Drava River and in its center grows the oldest – over 450 years old – vine in the world. Can you imagine this? This is definitely the most important wine-growing area in Slovenia. The beautiful plant of respectable age is certainly one of the many reasons why the Maribor – Pohorje, Slovenian Styria destination is worth a visit. Main Square

Glavni Trg or The Main square is the second largest square in Maribor, where the history and the hustle and bustle of town life flow into one. Old Vine House

The Old Vine, the oldest vine in the world, resides in Maribor right at the centre of the old town. Pyramid Hill

Lent

Lent is the most delightful and the oldest part of the city of Maribor. The oldest vine in the world grows its deep roots in front of the Old Vine House and has witnessed many stories that have taken place on the banks of the Drava River. Ljudski vrt – NK Maribor

The Stadion Ljudski vrt (English: People’s Garden, German: Volksgarten; abbreviation: LV) is an association football stadium located on the left bank of the river Drava in the district of Koroška Vrata, Maribor, Slovenia, with a seating capacity of 12,702.
